Balayage or Highlights?
It's one of the most common questions in the salon, and the answer comes down to the look you want and how much upkeep suits your life. At Wigs & Warpaint in Sheffield, we do both every day. Here's how they differ.
What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a freehand technique where colour is hand-painted onto the surface of the hair. It creates a soft, sun-kissed, lived-in finish that's lighter towards the ends and blended at the root, so there's no harsh regrowth line.
What Are Highlights?
Traditional highlights are woven in sections and wrapped in foils. This gives a more uniform, all-over brightness and lets us lift the colour closer to the root, which is ideal for full coverage or a brighter, more consistent blonde.
The Key Differences
- Finish: balayage is soft and natural; highlights are brighter and more uniform.
- Regrowth: balayage grows out softly with no obvious line; highlights show regrowth sooner.
- Maintenance: balayage usually needs fewer salon visits; highlights need topping up more often.
- Time & cost: both vary with hair length and how much lift you want; we'll quote you at consultation.
Which Should You Choose?
If you want low-maintenance, natural-looking colour, balayage is usually the answer. If you want all-over brightness or fuller coverage, highlights win. Many clients combine the two.
