Build a Curly Routine That Works
Good curls are mostly about a good routine. You don't need a shelf full of products, just the right few used the right way. Here's the routine our curly hair specialists at Wigs & Warpaint in Sheffield recommend.
Wash Day
- Use a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo, and don't over-wash; curls are drier than straight hair.
- Condition generously and detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb while the conditioner is in, never dry.
- Rinse with cooler water at the end to boost shine.
Styling While Wet
Curls set the way you style them when wet, so this is the important bit. Apply your styling product (a cream, gel or mousse) to soaking wet hair in sections, then encourage the curl by scrunching upwards towards your scalp. Avoid touching them again until they're dry.
Drying
Air-dry if you have time, or use a diffuser on low heat, cupping the curls rather than blasting them. Once fully dry, scrunch out any crispness from the gel ("scrunch out the crunch") for soft, defined curls.
Between Washes
Refresh second-day curls with a little water or refresher spray and re-scrunch. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, or use a loose "pineapple" on top of your head, to protect the shape overnight.
The Right Products
We use and recommend Redken for curls in the salon, and we'll match products to your specific curl type and porosity. Frizz usually means your hair wants more moisture, not less.
