Make Your Extensions Last
Good extensions, well looked after, can stay beautiful for months. The fitting is only half the job; aftercare is what protects your investment. Here's the routine our stylists at Wigs & Warpaint in Sheffield recommend for tape-in and LA Weave extensions.
Washing
- Wait 48 hours after fitting before your first wash.
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, and keep conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends, away from the bonds or rings.
- Wash in the shower, not upside down in a sink, to avoid tangling.
Brushing
Brush daily with a soft extension-friendly brush, holding the hair at the root to take the tension off the attachments. Start at the ends and work up. Detangling gently is the single biggest thing you can do to keep them looking new.
Drying & Styling
Dry the roots and attachment area fully; damp bonds and rings are where problems start. Use heat protectant and keep straighteners and tongs away from the attachments. Your own hair plus the extensions still need looking after, so a weekly moisture or bond treatment helps.
Sleeping
Never sleep on wet extensions. Brush them out, tie them in a loose plait or low ponytail, and a silk or satin pillowcase will cut down friction and tangling overnight.
Maintenance Appointments
Book your refit on time (every 6–8 weeks for tape-ins, as advised for LA Weave). Leaving them too long is the most common cause of matting and discomfort.
