What is balayage?

Balayage is a freehand colouring technique — the lightener is painted on by hand rather than packed into foils. That's what gives it the soft, natural, sun-kissed finish, with colour that's brighter through the mid-lengths and ends and no harsh line as it grows out.

Balayage, babylights, root melt — what's the difference?

They're related ideas you'll hear used interchangeably. Babylights are fine, delicate highlights woven through for a subtle lift; a root melt or root stretch blends your natural base into the colour so there's no obvious starting point. Good balayage often combines these so the result looks effortless rather than "done".

How to prepare for your appointment

Every colour starts with a free consultation so we can check your hair's condition and history and agree a realistic plan. If it's your first colour with us — or your first in a while — we'll do a skin test at least 48 hours beforehand.

How long does it take, and how often?

Allow at least two hours, more if your hair is long, dark or previously coloured and needs careful lifting. Because there's no hard regrowth line, balayage is relatively low-maintenance — most people come back around every six weeks for a gloss or tidy, with a fuller refresh a few times a year.

Keeping it looking fresh

Use a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner and a heat protectant before styling — it keeps the tone true and the ends in good condition between visits.

Not ready for a full balayage?

Ask about face-framing or part highlights — a smaller amount of hand-painted colour around the face is a lovely, lower-commitment way to try the look.
